Welcome, Welcome, Welcome to the first ever episode of Snatched Edges.
This is my beginning in the world of podcasting, I’ve never done this before. But you know ‘New year, New me 2018. I’m trying to stretch myself and start new goals so I thought I would share my knowledge and love for hair on a different medium. To kinda help us all get together and get right you know we all got long hair goals put here you know tryna make sure our hair is full, healthy and everything so this is my way of helping the masses.
A little bit about me, My name is Ebuni, I’m a real nerd when it comes to hair. I’m actually studying a course in Trichology at the moment which is the study of the hair and scalp which at the ends I aim to open my own clinic and salon where I’ll be helping everybody inna real life and the focus would be on really really healthy hair, making sure that nobody has lost their edges due to bad styling or bad habits cause I know we really have a lot of those. So yeah, that's really what I wanted to do and for the first episode I wanted to keep it nice and light, nice and easy so I wanted to talk a little bit about some hair myths. There are five I put together that I feel like, a lot of people in the general public have when it comes to natural hair and black girls.
Number one: Black people cannot grow long hair.
Now this one is the absolute most nonsense, because I know we are all on Instagram seeing all these girls with like literal inches and it’s not because their mixed race or their foreign or exotic, you know? Regular degular african girls from the village that have that butt length hair so if they can do it, we can do it too. Yeah?
Number two: Weaves, relaxers and straightening mean people hate their natural hair.
Now I'm definitely not a natural hair nazi. I feel like everybody can do what they want with their hair. But I just prefer not to put any chemicals in. I’ve reached the stage of my life where I feel like you know, it’s not really for me. But I ain't never wanted to try to be no white woman. I just want my hair to be a little bit easier. Even that, for me I just didn't understand how to do my natural hair then. So you know, people can do whatever they want. If they want to have straight hair, if they want to have blonde hair; there's black people with both of those it doesn’t mean that they’re trying to be white you know, let them do them.
Number three: If you cut your hair, it will grow.
This is one that I hear all the time. “You must trim your hair, if you want to grow long hair” and I’m like.. Your hair grows from your scalp, not from the tips so how can cutting it - it doesn’t send out little messages up to your scalp “I’ve been trimmed, I’vebeen trimmed, let me grow” that’s not exactly how it works but trimming your hair will make sure that you can keep your hair long because it stops it from breaking or cutting or other things like that.
Number four: You have to use a lot of different products.
Now many girls are Hair Product Junkies. We go to the hair swap shop and we spend all of our hard earned coins on the different products that stimulate our scalp, deep conditioners, and shampoos and sulfate-frees and [ vocable ] and it's like.. Do we actually need all of this stuff? So as we go through different episodes I’ll be talking about how to create a proper hair regime and to really strip back your products cover because if you're using ten things you can't tell which ones working and which ones are not so a lot of them may actually contain chemicals that are actually damaging. So we’ll be going through what you need to use and what you can leave behind.
Number five: The one that really really really gets me the most. Is that afro hair looks messy or unkempt.
I can not even tell you the amount of times, I’ve been told when I’m wearing my hair “Are you not going to do it?” “Is that how you're going out”? And I’m like ‘How can my own hair that grows out my head be a problem’? And so I really feel like this year I’m going to really try to step on peoples neck with the way I just wear my hair because I want to do whatever I want and I hope that you guys do too. I feel like natural hair should be embraced whether it's kiny, coily, whatever texture you have; however you want to wear it, that’s up to you. That's your prerogative.
So those are my five Natural Hair Myths. I hope that you enjoyed them and that you can relate. My aim for this podcast as I’ve said before is to share tips and tricks on how to improve our hair and how to really look after it. I hope to do that through interviews, through advice, I want to have some guests on the show, I want to do product reviews, and styling tips.
